Bio:
I wasn’t one of those kids who knew she had to write. I was the one who decided that being an artist was for others, and instead relied on my left brain, becoming a math and science whiz. I eventually went into medicine. I was once hired, incredible as it may seem, to write a script, but this was in another era when I just did it so I could buy a car and then went back to studying.
I had a midlife reorganization when I hit a spectacularly awful wall taking my medical boards. I started over, valet parking and cleaning houses. I stumbled into doing coverage and rediscovered my joy in words. I’d always read books and other materials but now I interpreted others’ words and found ways of expressing my thoughts on paper. I relished my skill at crafting just the right way to say things, to speak via the written word.
I still didn’t consider myself a writer and decided I’d be good at producing because I’m organized and because I love movies. So I took a deep breath and produced a short film, teaching myself how to do that by doing it. I’ve never had so much fun in my life. My film is terrific and holds up after nineteen years.
I wrote a book for writers on what production company readers look for. I had a great time writing it, finding my voice so my audience could be entertained while learning sometimes-sticky lessons.
Then a friend challenged me by asking when I was going to write my movie. I freaked out for a year, and then I wrote my first feature. Much to my surprise, it was rather good. And I loved the process, agonizing and tweaking and questioning and all.
Since then, I’ve written a total of six features and three pilots, honing my craft further with each one.
