John Gabriele began his career in 1980 directing music videos in school . Subsequently he acquired his own half hour cable TV show in 1979 on the newly formed Manhattan Cable Nerwork and produced a variety show in the vein of Saturday Nite Live called " The Shortwave Show " , and airing the half hour before Saturday Nite Live's weekly telecast . Upon graduation from Long Island University with a BFA , he was briefly employed as a graphic artist doing paste up mechanical , until ,after his brief introduction to television he longed for something more than the graphic arts. Tho just out of school and comfortably employed , he read a book about film making which changed his life . At this time , he made the decision to change his direction and focus , so he decided to quit his job as a graphic artist , and begin a career in the filmmaking industry . After finding the grip dept on his first film , he soon worked his way up from entry level production assistant , to heading the grip department . Immediately acquiring himself a Key Grip position , and he beginning his career . This was back in 1980 . LAN less than 2yrs he was working exclusively as a Key Grip . Since then John has been Department head on over 50 feature films. He has also been known to work as a Gaffer when given the opportunity to creatively light a project, and has been the Gaffer on 10 feature films to date . John has spent over 38 years in the industry ... 25 yrs as a union (Nabet 15 and local 52 Iatse) technician in the grip department alone .Today however he no longer is affiliated with any union local. He still does work quite often out of the Local 1 and Local 4 Iatse stagehand union offices as a stagehand . Upon leaving the ranks of the union , as a filmmaker he has decided to apply his skills and experience ,and so has since broadened his scope of personal application within the industry and has transitioned himself to that of a creative entity , producing , directing , and shooting, as well as continuing along with a long career of Key Gripping . As a director he still directs music videos . He has also directed the Off Broadway play " How to Save a World ? " written by Yael Ginberg . At this time he is seeking finance to direct a feature film written by friend and partner , the journalist and author, Stephen Witt , entitled "Lynched" . I also performed integrations, insertion of slugs and other editing functions . Other duties such as scheduling and compiling all necessary materials needed for production such as hiring talent , scripting and recording voice over narrations , and any preproduction necessary for any successful production.
